What an overnight cleaner really costs
The sticker price of a cleaner is the wage. The real number is a lot bigger — and it's the number a robot has to beat.
When a facility manager compares a cleaning robot to "just hiring someone", they usually compare the robot's price to an hourly wage. That's the wrong comparison, because the wage is the smallest part of what an employed cleaner actually costs.
The loaded cost of one overnight cleaner
Take a single overnight commercial cleaner. On top of the base wage you're carrying:
- Penalty rates for overnight and weekend work
- Superannuation on top of every hour
- Annual and personal leave, plus the cost of covering it
- Recruitment and onboarding every time someone leaves — and overnight cleaning turns over fast
- Supervision and admin to roster, pay and manage
Add it up and a single overnight position lands well north of $55,000 a year fully loaded — often more in metro areas with penalty rates. And that's assuming the shift actually gets covered.
The cost you can't put on a spreadsheet
The bigger problem with overnight cleaning is reliability. The no-show rate is high, supervision is thin at 2am, and the standard drifts. When a cleaner doesn't turn up, the floor doesn't get done — and you find out when the centre opens.
A robot doesn't call in sick, doesn't need penalty rates, and runs to the same standard on a public holiday as a Tuesday.
Where the robot lands
An AR-Pro on Robotics-as-a-Service is around $449 a month — roughly $5,400 a year — covering the machine, parts, service and monitoring. Even if you keep a human for edges, restrooms and detail, you've moved the bulk floor work off the most expensive, least reliable line on the roster.
The honest framing: the robot doesn't fire your cleaner. It lets one person cover far more area, and it takes the part of the job that's hardest to staff and easiest to automate.
The comparison that matters
- One overnight cleaner, loaded: $55,000+/yr
- AR-Pro on RaaS: ~$5,400/yr, service included
- No recruitment, no no-shows, coverage reporting included
That's the comparison we put in front of every customer — openly, with their real floor area and shift — because when the maths is this clear, you don't need a sales pitch.
